Holiday Gift Guide: For Him

Brushed Stretch-Cotton Twill Shirt // Native Union Belt Cable // Where To Eat Pizza // Fleece Sweatpant // Portable Bluetooth Speaker // Red Wing Classic Boot // Tom Dixon Pen // Dot Dress Shirt // YETI Cooler // Nixon Stainless Steel Watch // Monogrammed Leather Wallet // Marled Slub Long-Sleeve Henley // Wool Blend Tech Gloves // Duffel Bag //

Holiday gift guides are here! I’m kicking it off with gifts to buy for the guys in your life. Why are men so hard to shop for? My husband, Max, loves anything I ever buy for him, but he has no idea how much thought and deliberation I put into everything I buy for him! After being with someone for nearly 8 years, you start to run out of ideas.

One of the best gifts I ever got for Max was his weekender bag. He uses it all the time and he feels so cool when he carries it. I also got my brother-in-law tech gloves last year, and those were also a huge hit. I always like to get Max things that he can wear, because he never shops for himself. Whether that be something like these, these, or this, I like to keep him looking like a dapper dude.

You also can’t go wrong by spoiling them with something like a Yeti cooler or a wireless speaker. Not only would they get a lot of use, but these are things that you could also use yourself! It’s a win-win.

If you need more ideas: I am thinking about these for my FIL, and this for my dad. Also thinking about this for another brother-in-law who has lots of nice shoes. And finally, for the man who refuses to shop for himself, a subscription to Trunk Club could be just what he needs.

P.S. I’m getting a camera this weekend! Which means I can start posting personal style posts! Stay tuned for most personalized content coming soon.

Trends Under $100

Blank Denim Gulden’s Blouse // Roma Chain Cross Body Bag // Levi’s 505C High Rise Crop Jeans // Freda Slide Sandal // Shashi Isadora Earrings // Knit Beaded Sweater // Hat Attack Wool Beret // Semiprecious Stone Layered Y-Necklace // Avery Backpack // Jaynee Platform Oxford Shoes // Marseille Pony Bow // Wool-Blend Jacket //

Trends come and they go. The older, more mature me is trying to invest less in fast fashion and seasonal trends, and focus more on pieces that are multi-seasonal and will last me a couple of years. That being said, every season, I find myself purchasing a few key pieces that are trendy because I just can’t resist. However, as I’ve shown you above, buying into these trends doesn’t have to be expensive. That’s the thing about trends – when they’re “trends,” you can pretty much find them anywhere.

Middle school me is THRILLED the hair bow is back. I used to love wearing bows in my hair. I also am surprised with myself how much I am loving the velvet trend. I have a wedding on New Years’ Eve this year, and I have my eyes on this or this. After seeing this sweater everywhere, I finally caved last weekend and bought it for myself. Can’t wait to pair with these. One more trend I invested in this season was the plaid blazer. I purchased this one for such a great price, and it wears like it’s expensive.

At the end of the day, you have to invest in what makes you feel best. If you love a trend, by all means buy it. On the other end of the spectrum, don’t feel like you need to invest in every trend to keep up with the times. Not all trends are for all people. There are plenty of trends that don’t work for me. You have to be the judge.

Sephora only has this sale twice a year, and this is the ONLY time of year they offer 20% off. This is the time to stock up on your necessities and start early on your Christmas shopping for the women in your life.  The sale is going on now until this Wednesday, 11/15.

My picks are actually mostly products I’ve used before and are my tried and true. I did throw in a few products that I’ve never tried and would like to try, as well. Below I’ve further broken down why I think some of these products are so great.

Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Invisible Cover Stick Foundation:

Make Up For Ever just knows how to do foundation.  I used to use their Ultra HD Invisible Cover Foundation all the time, until I became obsessed with foundation in the form of a stick. Their Ultra HD Invisible Cover Stick Foundation is one that I continue to reach for every morning when I get ready for work. Not only is the stick easier to apply, but the formula is easily spreadable and the coverage is full but not TOO thick.

Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo
The amount of dry shampoos I’ve dried in my day is borderline concerning. My thin, fine hair gets greasy after 24 hours, but I’m trying to train it to not be this way, so I try to wash it every other day. On those off days, I instead douse my hair in dry shampoo. The Living Proof dry shampoo has been my holy grail dry shampoo for a couple of years now (although I think I may have recently found one that comes close…more on that in a later post). This dry shampoo makes not only makes my hair look clean, it gives it more volume than it normally ever has. It also doesn’t leave the white residue that lots of dry shampoos leave.

Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder:
Beauty gurus aplenty consider this Laura Mercier loose setting powder a holy grail product, and I have to agree. It looks like it might leave color on your face, but it goes on completely translucent, as its name indicates. The powder has all kinds of uses, but I use it for two main purposes: to set my under eye concealer to keep it from creasing, and I put it all over my face if I am wearing a more hydrating foundation that might make me oily looking later on. The powder truly has a purpose for all skin types and though the price tag is steep, it will literally last you forever. I bought mine almost a year ago and I still have a ton of product left. It’s a one-time purchase that is well worth the money.

Kat Von D Tattoo Liner:
This eyeliner is no joke. It really lives up to it’s name of being a “tatoo liner.” Whenever I sleep in my makeup (which is more often than I’d like to admit) with this eyeliner on, it’s still on and going strong when I wake up the next morning. This is the most pigmented eye liner I’ve ever used. The other thing I like about it is that it’s a pen-like applicator, which makes it much less intimidating and easier to control. This product has also won the Allure “Best of Beauty” award several years in a row, so you know it’s good.

Clinique Take the Day Off Cleansing Balm:
I bought this product a couple of months ago in an attempt to up my skincare as my wedding was approaching. I hate to admit it, but I do almost nothing to take care of my skin. I almost never wash my face unless it’s in the shower. I was blessed with good skin, so I’ve never seen a need to do anything to take care of it (I know, I’m terrible, and I’ll regret it when I’m older). That being said, when I tried this cleansing balm, I enjoyed using it so much. For those of you, like me, that hate to wash your face, this product is so easy to use. You just take a few fingers full of it, rub it around on your face for like 20 seconds, and then rinse it off with hot water. It takes off even the toughest makeup, which is what I was most impressed with. Part of the reason I hate washing my face is because I can never seem to get all of my mascara off. But after rubbing my eyelashes with this product and rinsing it off with water, all my mascara came off. Color me impressed, and encouraged to continue washing my face.

Fall Neutrals

Old Navy Long Moto Jacket \\ Schutz Wrap Pumps \\ Thread & Supply Velvet Shirt \\ J.Crew Falling Star Earrings \\ Madewell Circle Shoulder Bag \\ Topshop Faux Fur Vest \\ Jeffrey Campbell Point Toe Mules \\ Eugenia Kim Hat \\ Cami NYC Sweetheart Camisole \\ Tassel Earrings \\ Trina Turk Oversized Collar Coat \\ Little Liffner Shoulder Bag \\ Cinq a Sept Emira Pullover \\ Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance Palette \\ Nike Sneaker \\

Fall is my favorite time of year for fashion. In my opinion, there’s nothing better than cozy sweaters, big scarves, boots, and cute jackets. Fall (and honestly winter – it was like 20 degrees today, wtf) decided to come extra early this year here in Minneapolis, so I’m finding myself on the hunt for new sweaters that hit this year’s trends. Another goal of mine this fall/winter is to invest in a “grown up” coat. I’m talking a nice jacket that I could wear for a night out to a nice dinner, or to a wedding. All I have right now is the classic puffy winter jacket. Don’t get me wrong, those jackets are great, and completely necessary for winter in Minnesota, but it’s nice to have options if I want to dress up or dress down my outfit. This Trina Turk jacket pictured above is right up the alley of what I’m looking for (and it’s on sale!).

Another thing I like to pull out in the fall is accessories. My fall uniform usually consists of jeans and a sweater, so in order to elevate that outfit, I like to add accessories like eye-catching earrings, a cute handbag, or a big hat (especially on dirty hair days, hats are a life saver and make you feel more put together than you actually are).

I like to wear neutrals any time of the year, but there seems to be a wider abundance of neutral tones in the fall. I’m a fan of neutrals because they go with everything. Keep in mind “neutrals” these days are colors like marigold, blush, burnt orange/copper, navy, and even leopard, to name a few.

See below for a few more neutrals I have my eye on…

This skirt would be so perfect for upcoming holiday soirees paired with a big sweater and heels.

Pearls are making a comeback this fall, and this sweatshirt is a perfectly understated way to wear this trend.

This jacket is all the rage right now. I see so many bloggers wearing it, and for good reason – it’s so practical. You can dress it up with a dress and heels, or dress it down with a tee and ripped jeans.

This blouse is so luxe, and comes in two gorgeous neutral colors.

I’d totally wear this dress for Thanksgiving with black tights and black booties (if I wasn’t going to be in Mexico for Thanksgiving :) ) This is just a great staple to have in your closet.

This poncho looks so cozy and could be worn with leggings, jeans, or a skirt. Super versatile.

P.S. I absolutely can’t stand this blog layout (Century Gothic? wtf) so I hope to have a new updated layout ASAP. Just had to get that off my chest.

Hump Day Hearsay #12: I’m Back!

You guys.  I’m back.

I don’t even know where to start.  The last year or so, I’ve been feeling really inspired to write.  I’ve always loved writing.  I was an English major in college, so I love reading books and I love to write. A goal of mine is actually to write a book at some point in my life, but more of that to come in a future post. I felt that starting my blog up again would be the best way for my to channel my inspiration. This time around, I plan to do things a little differently. I’d like the style of the blog to be more writing heavy. I also would like to write about a wider range of topics. I still, of course, want to write about fashion and beauty, but in a more sophisticated way (if that makes any sense?). But I’d also like to write about things like travel, books I’ve read, and fitness. I also want it to be more personable, and have my readers get to know me through my writing. I feel like I was trying to be someone I’m not in my old posts. This time around, I want to be my authentic self. The blog also needs some updates (i.e. layout/design, and my picture, for starters), so I’ll be working on that in the near future hopefully. It’s going to take some time to remember how to do this whole blogging thing. It took me awhile to figure out how to even log into this thing. So, bare with me as I get back into the swing of things.

Obviously a lot has changed in 3.5 years, and I’ve done quite a bit of growing up. I graduated from the University of Iowa and moved back to Minneapolis. I moved in with my boyfriend, we got engaged last September, and actually just got married this past weekend! So, I have a husband now :) that’s a quick recap on what I’ve been up to in my absence.

Anyways, back to regularly scheduled programming. Here is this week’s links for Hump Day Hearsay:

I know it’s still early November, but it’s never too early to start getting in the holiday spirit if you ask me. Especially here in Minnesota, it gets cold and dark at 2PM, we need something to look forward to around here. With that being said, this post from Liz at Sequins & Stripes on 10 holiday cookies to make made me so happy. I can’t wait to try the peanut butter nutella swirl cookies and the pumpkin chai snickerdoodles.

This year, I have really started trying to focus on healthy eating. I really enjoy grocery shopping, but I find it’s not always easy to buy all healthy things. I found this post from Shape magazine on the healthiest packaged foods to buy at Target very interesting.

My husband and I just finished the 8th episode of Stranger Things tonight (1 episode to go!). I thought it was so fun that they had Dustin wear a vintage sweatshirt from the Minnesota Science Museum. Love a good Minnesota shout out! The sweatshirt actually went live on their website yesterday, and it apparently crashed their website!

Nordstrom’s Fall sale is going on right now through November 12th. There’s TONS of stuff on sale up to 40% off. I have my eye on this, these, this (SO cute!), these in the grey, and this. I also have these in the grey suede and I wear them ALL the time!

Taylor from Little Blonde Book has THE MOST amazing skin I’ve ever seen. So, her skincare routine post is a definite must-read. I actually tweeted at her recently asking what her skincare secret was, and she said she swore by Tula products. So, I am planning to get some of those products ASAP.

Another thing I’ve been thinking about recently is that I want to create an app (lots of big ideas lately, I know). This post on 5 apps that will help you with the holidays was super inspiring for me. Why didn’t I think of any of these?!

As some of you know, I am a HUGE Taylor Swift fan (a self-proclaimed Swiftie). She is releasing her new album this Friday, and just released the full tracklist today. Consider me HYPED.

I’ve always thought subscription boxes were clever gift ideas, especially for friends. They are literally the gift that keeps on giving. I thought this post on the best fashion subscription boxes for the women on your holiday list was pretty on point. I’ve actually tried a number of these boxes, and have good experiences with the ones I’ve tried.

Feel free to send me any noteworthy links you think are worthy of being shared in upcoming Humpday Hearsay posts!
